Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) is probably the greatest British painter of the brilliant artistic renaissance which occurred in Victorian England.

Of all nineteenth-century English artists it was Leighton who created the grandest and most elaborate figurative paintings, covering a range of mythological, historical and literary subjects. He combined a grand academic style with a sensuous delight in the vigour and movement of the human form.

A European in terms of upbringing and training, his talents were also expressed in ravishing landscapes and sculptures, and as President of the Royal Academy he completely revitalized British Art.
