Ce catalogue peu courant a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition Benjamin West American Painter at the English Court présentée au Baltimore Museum of Art, du 4 juin au 20 août 1989.
Né en Pennsylvanie en 1738, le peintre Benjamin West fut le premier artiste américain à voyager en Italie. Arrivé à Rome en 1760, il fréquenta notamment Anton Raphael Mengs, l'un des thuriféraires du retour à l'antique. En 1762, il rencontre le bibliothécaire du roi d'Angleterre George III et quitte l'année suivante l'Italie pour Londres en passant par Paris.
Il décide alors de s'installer définitivement en Angleterre où il est vite surnommé "The American Raphael". En 1792, il succède à Sir Joshua Reynolds à la tête de la Royal Academy ; il collaborera à la décoration de Fonthill Abbey, la demeure néo-gothique de William Beckford.
Benjamin West meurt le 11 mars 1820 à Londres ; il est enterré à la cathédrale Saint-Paul.
