The Regency was an era marked by extravagance of behaviour and personality, by superb achievements in literature and art -one which swung "between extremes of elegance and refinement and depths of sodden brutality."
The Central figure is the Prince Regent himself, a complex, gigantic "spoilt child" who was nevertheless a notable patron of the arts, and probably the best company of English monarch between Charles II and Edward VII.
